Mercury Glass

Mercury glass is the common term for silvered glass, which describes glass that was blown double walled, then silvered between the layers with a liquid silvering solution, and sealed. Silvered glass was free-blown, then silvered with a solution containing silver nitrate and grape sugar in solution, heated, then closed. Sealing methods include metal discs covered with a glass round (England) or a cork inserted into the unpolished pontil scar (American). "Mercury" silvered glass was produced originally from around 1840 Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, Germany, and was also manufactured in England from 1849-55.

Silvered Glass is a layer of glass which is coated with a special compound of silver nitrate and sugar water. This is commonly done on the inside of blown glass ornaments to make them shiny. Decorative paint is then also applied to the outside of the glass. This process was invented in Lausha, Germany and copied widely.
The most commonly found glass ornaments are silvered glass and not double walled mercury glass which is quite heavy and unmistakable.

Different Types of Glass Ornaments

Machine blown ornament (shown):

Hand/Mouth Blown

Talented and skilled glassblowers use molds to produce the finely and uniquely shaped ornaments. The mold is carved into two pieces with a space for the tube at one end. These are fastened together and the glassblower inserts the glass and his pipette. The result is an ornament that conforms to the shape of the mold with a long “pike”, ready for finishing.

Machine Blown
The age of the ornament does not define whether an ornament is machine or hand/mouth blown. In the 1930’s, Corning Glass developed ‘ribbon-blowing machines’ for blowing glass ornaments.
On any hand/mouth blown ornament, you will always find a “dimple” where the glassblower touched the ornament while the glass was hot, to shape and form it.

Free Blown
Proficient glassblowers are able to make a sphere and other shapes by turning the ornament as it is blown, pulling it into a shape, etc. This results in a free blown ornament.

Worth Repeating

OK, so I am not a big purchaser of on line ornaments only because I HATE paying "handling" fees. The shipping is expected as long as it's reasonable (come on ...ornaments are light a airy)...yes they need bubble wrap to keep from breaking but some retailers go "overboard" on handling charges to the point of robbery. If I find a yummy ornament that I am pretty sure I can't find at the bigger shops in bigger cities close by (re:Portland Oregon), I will "bite the bullet" and go for it. While browsing the other day I came across the following and having ornament withdrawals mid winter, I decided to place an order. I kid you not....the shipping across the country...Mississippi to Oregon was only $3.95 for 2 ornaments.....and they arrived with in 3 days in splendid condition....Holy Moly what FABULOUS service! So, I decided to give a shout out to Pence Christmas Tree Farm. While I am still learning about this retirement venture of the owners, from what I can gather is that the retired husband started (click here)Pence Christmas Tree Farm, his wife then opened (click here)Southern Belles and Whistles shop and they recently added (click here)Trendy Tree to their offerings. Will I be a repeat customer (she says with a smile), You BET !!!!!

Ornament Lines carried on their site(s) are Inge Glass, Old World, Santa Klaus, Varsovia and RAZ which are all very reasonably priced. Old World Ornaments can be found everywhere so I am particularly please they are offing Varsovia and Inge Glass as well as RAZ a new whimsical favorite!!
